Wired's Amy Wallace got sued by anti-vacciners & lived to tell the tale

Wired's magazine Amy Wallace published a very insightful piece  that gave a different perspective on the anti-vaccine movement back in November of 2009. In this recent piece, Ms. Wallace narrates the details of a suit brought against her as a result of publishing her story. Although the article is intended for journalist, I think it gives us a good perspective on the anti-vaccine debate. I was happy to know that the suit against Ms Wallace got dismissed in court.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Epidemic Declared in California

California is currently experiencing an epidemic of whooping cough (Pertussis). The epidemic was officially declared on June 18, and we are now on pace to suffer the most illness and death due to pertussis in over 50 years.

As of June 30, California had recorded 1337 cases of pertussis in 2010, a five-fold increase from the same period last year when 258 cases were recorded. In addition, 700 more possible cases of pertussis are being investigated by local health departments.

Six infants — all under two months of age — have died from the disease so far this year. None had received any doses of the vaccine. The majority of infant cases of pertussis have occured in infants under 3 months of age.

Summer Flu Shot

Although flu season doesn't hit until the beginning part of the 2010, flu vaccines start to arrive mid-summer. For those children that are coming in for their yearly and school physical, we are offering parents to vaccinate their children against the influenza virus.

The vaccine can protect a child for up to 16 months after given the shot ensuring they will stay protected for the entire season.
