Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Epidemic Declared in California

California is currently experiencing an epidemic of whooping cough (Pertussis). The epidemic was officially declared on June 18, and we are now on pace to suffer the most illness and death due to pertussis in over 50 years.
As of June 30, California had recorded 1337 cases of pertussis in 2010, a five-fold increase from the same period last year when 258 cases were recorded. In addition, 700 more possible cases of pertussis are being investigated by local health departments.
Six infants — all under two months of age — have died from the disease so far this year. None had received any doses of the vaccine. The majority of infant cases of pertussis have occured in infants under 3 months of age.
